Dr. Jon Zawislak - Common Scents:  Pheromone Communication in the Bee Hive

Jon will speak about how honey bees communicate effectively. How chemical pheromones relay information to individuals as well as the entire colony. His presentation will give an overview of some of the bees' more important pheromones, and their functions within honey bee society.

Dr. Jon Zawislak is the apiculture specialist for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service.  He has worked and played with honey bees since 1998, and is equally at home in the apiary, the laboratory or the classroom.  Each year he presents lectures, workshops and short courses for new and experienced beekeepers throughout Arkansas and beyond.  His teaching emphasizes the biology and behavior of honey bees and associated pests as the cornerstones of keeping colonies productive and healthy.  He also spreads the word about the importance of bees and other pollinators to the non-beekeeping public.  Jon has a background in botany and entomology, as well as journalism and graphic arts, and is an EAS-certified Master Beekeeper. He and his family operate Walnut Valley Honey Company in Little Rock, Arkansas, supplying pollinators for area community gardens and producing great products from their hives.
